Fujiyama:The Eternal Mountain

A visit to Tokyo in 2005 provided the inspiration for this piece: the unforgettable image of Mt Fuji caught at sunrise in pastel pink, silently dominating the city landscape in its timeless majesty. The music carries the suggestion of a story:

1. Sengen’s Lament: The ancient goddess of Mt Fuji grieves for what man has done to himself and to this world.

2. Breath of Hakone: At Sengen’s bidding the volcano erupts in a cataclysm of stinking, deadly retribution.

3. Falling Blossom: Then out of the ashes grows a cherry tree which, in its brief flowering ,stands as the delicate symbol of hope and reconciliation.

Jigge, Reel and Hornipipe

A light-hearted dance suite. The central Reel (subtitled 'The Wonky Timepiece') has elements of the American ‘hoedown’ while the outer movements are more English in character.

Layla

A little piece written in 2008 to celebrate the arrival of my first grandchild, reflecting her dancing skills with touches of High Life, Ragtime and Rhumba.

Ballade en Souvenir de Paddy

A tribute to the thousands of Irish who fought, suffered and died in two world wars whilst serving in the British armed forces.

The original solo version of Tango dates from 1985. I am grateful to Maestro Leo Brouwer for his suggestion that it should be expanded into a suite.

Tango for Flute and Guitar

Since first composed for solo guitar Tango has undergone a number of transformations. This adaptation for flute and guitar is the one most frequently played.
